First of all you need to have one or two books in which you can look up and identified the birds that you see. There are several field guides for birding that can be easily purchased in your local bookstore. Some field guides have a quick color reference to make an identification easier. Some bird guides have helpful recognition tips to help you identify different varieties of birds.
A pair of binoculars is another must-have piece of equipment for successful birding. When looking to purchase binoculars for your new hobby, choose binoculars that will enable you to see clearly the markings of a bird. A pair of 8 x 32 binoculars is recommended for most beginning birders. This size of binoculars is easy to hold steady and will give wide view.
It is a good idea to take a journal or a notepad with pen or pencil with you when you go birdwatching. This is a good way to record the birds that you observe, and also any specific behavior or information that you want to remember about the birds or habitat.
